What We Stock

Ornamental tube is stainless steel tube manufactured to ASTM A554 for mechanical and decorative service rather than to pressure-pipe specifications. The product family covers round, square, and rectangular profiles in 304/304L and 316/316L stainless, supplied in mill finish for downstream fabrication or polished to 180 grit or 600 grit for direct architectural and finished-service use. Unified Alloys supplies fabricators, OEM equipment manufacturers, marine outfitters, architectural contractors, and municipal and healthcare facilities across Canada.

Round tube is stocked from 1/2″ through 6″ OD with wall thicknesses from 0.035″ through 0.120″, suitable for handrails, ladders, balustrades, and general fabrication. Square tube runs 1/2″ through 8″ with walls from 0.065″ through 0.250″, common in architectural frames and OEM equipment. Rectangular tube is stocked from 1/2″ × 1″ through 12″ in larger configurations with the same 0.065″ – 0.250″ wall range.

304/304L is the cost-effective choice for interior, dry, and non-corrosive environments. 316/316L is specified where marine atmosphere, chlorinated water (pool decks, splash zones), or healthcare and foodservice sanitation requirements drive the material decision. Both grades are L-modified (low carbon) variants suitable for welded fabrication without sensitization concerns.

Custom sizes, non-standard wall thicknesses, and specialty profiles outside the stocked range are quoted on request. Cut-to-length and finishing services are available across all branches.

Finish & Polish

Mill, 180 Grit & 600 Grit

Stainless tube finish runs from rough mill-as-produced through to mirror-bright polish. The right finish depends on whether the tube will be coated or fabricated further, used as visible architectural feature, or installed in a sanitation-critical environment. Three finishes cover most procurement.

Mill Finish

As-produced from the mill — dull, with surface marks, scale residue, and visible welding lines on the seam. Specified when the tube will be coated, painted, powder-coated, or polished after fabrication, where the as-supplied surface doesn’t matter. Lowest-cost finish in the stocking range. Common for hidden structural applications, OEM equipment with downstream finishing, and any installation where the tube surface will not be visible in service.

180 Grit

Brushed/satin finish achieved by mechanical polishing with 180-grit abrasive. Uniform directional finish, visually clean without being mirror-bright. The workhorse finish for handrails, grab bars, marine rails, ladders, and most architectural applications. Hides minor scratches and fingerprints far better than a higher polish, which is why it’s the default for high-touch surfaces. The standard expectation for stainless ornamental work unless the project specifies otherwise.

600 Grit

Near-mirror polish achieved through progressive fine-grit polishing. Bright, highly reflective, used for feature architectural work, premium finish handrails, foodservice and healthcare environments where surface cleanability matters, and any application where the tube is a visual element rather than just functional hardware. More expensive than 180 grit per foot and more susceptible to visible scratches and fingerprints in service — worth confirming with the end user that the maintenance trade-off is understood before specifying.

Finish selection is the headline procurement variable for ornamental tube. Confirm the finish at the time of quote — finishing changes downstream are far more expensive than ordering correctly the first time.

304/304L covers most interior, dry, and non-corrosive applications and is the lower-cost choice. 316/316L adds molybdenum to the alloy chemistry, which significantly improves resistance to chloride corrosion — specify it for marine environments (boat railings, dock hardware, coastal architecture), chlorinated water applications (swimming pool rails, splash zones), and foodservice or healthcare environments where chemical cleaning and sanitation are routine. The cost premium for 316 over 304 is typically 30–50% depending on size and market conditions; over the life of an exterior installation, that premium prevents the staining, pitting, and replacement costs that 304 in chloride service tends to develop. For interior architectural and OEM work without chloride exposure, 304 is genuinely the right answer. For anything outdoors near saltwater, 316 is the safer call.

180 grit is the default for ornamental tube and what most procurement should start with. It’s the satin/brushed finish you see on virtually all stainless handrails, grab bars, and architectural rails — uniform, clean, and forgiving of fingerprints and minor surface scratches in service. 600 grit is mirror-bright, used where the tube is a visual feature element rather than just functional hardware. The trade-off with 600 grit is twofold: the per-foot cost is higher, and the higher polish shows fingerprints, water spots, and surface scratches that 180 grit hides. For most handrail and architectural work, 180 grit is the correct spec. For feature staircases, premium architectural installations, and healthcare or foodservice equipment where cleanability is critical, 600 grit justifies its premium. When in doubt, confirm with the end user or specifier — finish changes after delivery are expensive.

Yes. Cut-to-length service is available across all five branches and is a standard part of how ornamental tube ships — most orders involve cutting from full-length stock to the project’s specified piece lengths. Saw-cut ends are standard; bevelled, mitred, and notched ends are available on request. For long-run fabrication orders, send the cut list with the quote request and we’ll factor cutting into pricing and lead time. Bear in mind that cut-to-length pieces shorter than the standard remnant range may have minimum-quantity considerations — confirm at quote stage.

Ornamental tube manufactured to ASTM A554 is welded. The seam is rolled from coil stock, longitudinally welded, then drawn and finished — for polished grades (180 grit and 600 grit), the seam is finished out so it’s not visible on the final product. Seamless ornamental tube exists in some specialty grades and sizes but is significantly more expensive and not what UA stocks for general ornamental service. If your project specifies seamless tube for ornamental use, confirm whether the specification is genuinely necessary (often it’s specified by habit rather than requirement) or whether welded A554 with finishing is acceptable — the latter is almost always faster, more available, and substantially less expensive.
