Potable Water Contact Requires Certified Materials — Full Stop
Municipal water and wastewater projects are not a context where material compliance is optional. Pipe, fittings, flanges, and fasteners in contact with potable water must meet NSF/ANSI 61 requirements in every Canadian province. Unified Alloys holds CSA certification for 304/L and 316/L stainless products — pipe, flanges, fittings, hangers, shapes, plates, sheets, and fasteners — to both NSF/ANSI 61 and NSF/ANSI 372 (lead-free). Potable Water Contact — NSF/ANSI 61 Compliance
All piping materials in contact with drinking water must meet NSF/ANSI 61 requirements. Unified Alloys holds CSA certification for 304/L and 316/L stainless products to NSF/ANSI 61, covering pipe, flanges, fittings, hangers, and fasteners. Lead-Free Requirements — NSF/ANSI 372
NSF/ANSI 372 certification confirms lead content below 0.25% weighted average in wetted surfaces, meeting the requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act amendments adopted across Canadian provinces. Unified Alloys' 304/L and 316/L stainless products are certified to NSF/ANSI 372 as well as NSF/ANSI 61.

Disinfectant Corrosion — Chloramine and Chlorine Dioxide
Aggressive disinfection regimes using chloramine or chlorine dioxide at elevated concentrations attack lower-grade materials and accelerate pitting in marginal stainless. 316L's higher molybdenum content provides meaningful resistance advantage over 304L in chloride-bearing or oxidising disinfectant environments, particularly in recirculating hot water systems.

Wastewater and Chemical Dosing
Wastewater treatment facilities combine corrosive effluent chemistry with chemical dosing streams — sodium hypochlorite, ferric chloride, caustic soda — that attack carbon steel rapidly. 316L is the standard specification for wastewater treatment plant process piping; 317L is specified in more aggressive chemical dosing applications.
